\n You're never forget I never give up. Welcome to the hashtag called testing podcast. The show focused on the strategic disruption of the status quo in technical organizations, communities and events. Theo way and I'm here is the Cold War. Always hail to register. Dio is looking Good morning.
\n This is talking about here. Spoken about this mentorship inclusion and diversity and take for the last year has convertibles on top of this is the last year. So you're really gonna get it. So I have great you could find your career or business cards. So from now on, Twitter have a podcast called Community Engineering Report that I will be giving in December because I've made you can find a little website. I my credentials here because there's a Black female from the south There, somebody out there is gonna be like this so that straight up front, I have a masters and training and development.
\n Have a doctor pursuing a doctor of business administration specializing in technology entrepreneurship, my doctor pieces by Dr Studies on successful strategies for increasing Organizational Monastery, and I'm focusing on mentoring organizations. And I'm also writing a book how they never organizational culture for competitive advantage. So that is why I'm here. So give a little back story. It is. I started last year. My first conference was last year in Scotland. Serious. And it started with talk, overcoming the challenges and mentoring because, as I will protect in 2014 after my father passed away has only child was my greatest fear.
\n And because I didn't die like crap, this is what I want to do. And so I left education. I'm a certified special needs teacher. And so I left education. Go figure out this technique. I said 10 text my family, Francis, is I'm going in leaving education of going in to take that Nichols because next thing expose when I figured it out, you know, I spent so much time about six months just going to conferences and and for the first time, being Black and female in the South, was working from because I was getting free stuff my first job conference and didn't know what jobs for waas.
\n But it was so nearly as I mean, that was a lot of you, actually. Why? Artificial intelligence? I was more than a consumer of tank But I never saw myself to produce Eurotech. I was a person who will watch the app Aquino not just for the products of see why they didn't do this. Why get this just really interested in and things When I want to build a website? Man, I follow you to work Rest video from start to finish And I have a great product That's my current website is built on thank you very much. And so I starts making promises and I was at a closer conference and somebody can work where Engineers you name your time baking in the engineer researcher educated Look up These words will see if they resonate with me So for me, community is when I researched it was a feeling of fellowship of others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals like OK, that sounds like me engineering to arrange manage carried through about successful offer execution that makes it so.
\n For me, community engineering is the intentional skill for effort of creating environments with support, the sharing of common attitudes, interested goals in order to grow and more inclusive in diverse technology community right now.
\n OK, So the community for is the heart H e a r t. That our mission, our vision, our passionate thing that makes us get up in the morning. My morning. I'm having a guard. This place What is that thing? And you know you have these nonprofits. They are mission driven. We have social responsible businesses, their missions. The problem finding, though, is how do you aboriginal eyes Mission. How do you measure? Nice. How do you measure our response? Being responsible to our customers.
\n How do you measure that? Most people can't because most people focus on a product of service which is not a business. Probable service is a product, a service. You need to have underlined structures four to be business. And this is where I find that we're having challenges in our news. So why would the community engineering, as I defined just technology now literally touches almost everyone? It is no longer playing a round of just a few. It isn't economically prudent to be a proxy service that don't reflect the needs and desires a large proportion of the population.
\n So it makes sense that the technology community is now who is on attractive warning loose, diverse relationships. Memberships. Hey, let's be honest, my podcast community engineer report I intentionally is a Black thing You brought up in itself did not want to talk about including university. Just do one had a conversation. My life is hard. And when it came to diversity inclusion in Atlanta, that was the only a lot of times my mom sacrificed a lot so that I could be the only get symphony, the only ballet, the only active glasses, the only at a lot of things that my peers were experiencing.
\n So I was like How I want to talk about your politics and your morals, especially in this climate that way. But we need to have something happened. I have these conversations in the way that means something to me. Your business degree. We can talk about economics and business perspective because that's what this is. Let's be honest, most business owners. This is about business, and you could get upset about it. You can say all that's not right. You could say with you, you want to, but the bottom line diversity and inclusion helps your bottom line parents. Now that changes your spirit, then that's a bonus.
\n Well, what we're getting in. You ain't you is out. Unless is the true nature of it. And when people start having and that's why I don't want to have my pockets. So have uncomfortable conversations that we're having any small rooms. But we're not having in in public because everybody's Since people don't want to say this, you say something. If I say so crazy, I don't mean mental illness, But then someone gets offended by that. People are thinking about intentions behind things, and people are are scares have certain conversations. And we're not gonna get to the other side of this stuff until we have these complicated, uncomfortable conversations. Why guys get over it for the first time.
\n Not only experts in the rule, and that's OK, Theo. You you tell you play about totally different set of rules have been playing, so I got me a legal Guys, I don't need to make this up when I have questions. I was working for me right now. You guys have the keys. You know what imaginary doors are If you come up against something that we consider the fault like I can't do that, you guys just like a step that freakin exist what they think.
\n Forget that you because you guys know the rules and it's because the systems built because you guys have power. It's not your fault, but you benefit from it. Honest conversations about that You benefit from it until every person who wants to have a conversation about this toe Washington three part documentary. A Sense of Women. It's on Netflix. She talks about it, directly, addresses the Google Manifesto. She talks about it. All these beliefs that people have, that women are, where we are because of our minds or biology or psychology.
\n She was actually shows a great historian researcher. How very in cultures where women were evil are or in the dominant role, how those things changed because we didn't want a power. So I don't think there were here and we're behind because it's something leaving or something that's a fault with us. It's the system, and that's why I talk about business. I don't talk about silos. I want to change the system, your culture sauce because your system sucks.
\n Well, my is great. Oh, so you're telling me you're living in Nirvana and the rest of the organization is living back should hail. That's a problem with that. There's a systemic issue with that. And businesses are not going to change these inclusion and diversity numbers in this by bringing in women people of color. People with disabilities is not gonna happen socially. Rotate in the culture sought ships us. We're gonna rotate out. And then you use that as an excuse to say, Well, what we try. They just don't fit here. No, they don't fit in that crack. What? They fit in technology.
\n So too often these are things that are affected. Inclusion in issues they know we are. They know what we do in their figure it out. OK, Sunyer goes away. We don't know. We don't care. And if you want my attention, you need to come out of your ivory tower company. I do not. It is not my responsibility to go. You. This is a big problem. Well, we have these meet ups. No one's kind of people don't know. You already be over to see. Look at this room. Very few women, very few people of color and very few people of color who that right there is just like it.
\n And so that tells you were not aware off this thing. So as an educator, if I wanted to reach you, I can't sit at my desk and say, You know where I'm sitting right here, Names on the door. I would never It is my job to engage with the students to figure out where they all what they make it a about bill and that about you because it's not about you because you need us to make you success.
\n That's another thing I want to tell. My marginalizing underrepresented members do not let this industry dictate your do not beg for a job. You figure out what you're good at and you tell me what your values Because they you they need your perspective at the table to create products services that over way. I don't know what you do again. It tends to work. Everyone wants to quick fixes looking. Do everybody wants to take the light wave approach? This stuff is hard, so that means you're gonna go up there and they look at you like home is this way.
\n You know the book up put on a 60 because this is what we've been living with If you're feeling any this conference only much of what we feel every single day walking around in this world. So walk up. You'll be OK Put on your big guy drawls. Is it? I'm not saying you used what people don't trust. The things that the power structures have done to people watching last underrepresented communities have been atrocious. And you need to understand that when you go into these communities also there figure it out idea As an educator, just I have a group of 10 people.
\n They are intellectually disable, and I'm gonna be honest. That's politically correct. What s a mouse? Intellectually disabled people say, Oh, so can they learn this? Why didn't they take that? They don't get it. But when I say they're mildly retarded people that oh, there's only so I need to be more there's another No one likes to turn People understand what they mean for some is the work intellectual. This able for something, anything off pushing a little harder? Well, you have to frustrate yourself in the student cause they're not.
\n Tomorrow you're gonna be doing the same thing you did yesterday today. So I'm here abrasive. Yeah, I don't know. Purpose. Really? Because I figure when I when I was in high school, when I taught high school, if I could be as honest as I could be with those young people who were preparing themselves for the real world. You are bills get over and you have to understand they did my attention.
\n So one of my students, one student, she wasn't last. She was gonna be the valedictorian under glass while she was and all the teams she knew she knew. This is gonna be an interesting account because I said, that's great. But you realize your top of all right did not take one for you. Compete with these beers. You have not been out in the world because she's in a title. One school she hold living around other Black students. And so in the words blasted this whole system had not prepared her to compete with anybody other people. Worse that she loves.
\n So what's something When I waas being hard, I was being honest. You have competed. We need to prepare a cuticle Pete with people who are the top of their class in great school district's, because that's how you make a we need to have these honest conversations, other challenges community not understanding the difference between diversity and inclusion and what both our port So you could never say you didn't know what to find. Diversity is invited to the table. You can bring every nationality you want and sitting at a table.
\n That table is diverse. Enclosure is listening to the perspectives off those individuals and making this season's based on those perspectives. And those were just there when there's a photo. That's his diversity in your business people. If those people are at the tables when decisions need to be made, that affected organization because they have a perspective that, you know, I do not have a white male perspective, nor do I want it. So why I tried to put myself in their position and their questions? I have to ask about an experience that I don't know. I'm gonna go to that group of people and say, Hey, can you enlighten what this thing is? I'm not gonna make assumptions because I have a friend.
\n You got what friend? Yes, all my question. I That's why legal what me not understanding that the goals of respective communities are different than watch that you. So you're going to these communities and you want to go and interview. We need to bring more women to this thing. We need to do this. You have your own. I tend real intentions. They have their own. You're going to communities where technology.
\n That phone is still toy. They don't see it as a tool that we see this. They see a power to be able to bury their lives around. They see this, then that's where you have to meet or I don't even understand what this thing is. Tell me, how can I How can you tell me this impacting the power? I don't know how this works. Is that 100 goals? Because unless they get that your goals are met College campus right now, their first week of school.
\n How many credit card people in the past that they were when I was making gave me a very express? I have a job. What the hell. But I want to speak with the ball because they know that. What's your customer? If you need a mortgage or something, you're gonna think back on. Hey, They gave me this chance. And I'm also gonna speak to people mentoring. I don't want him into any, but I can't need you antibiotics. It takes about a year from level low. And then by that time, they're gonna go somewhere else. Buddy, they're not leaving because you mentioned they're leaving because they got skills in your culture. Something to get the hell out of There you go somewhere else.
\n Hello, All. For many of you, 2020 has turned out to be the year that I've been waiting for the moment for you to realize that fundamental, systemic changes necessary for us to move forward as an inclusive society. Many of you have also realised the importance of protecting and supporting independent voices like my own enforcing this necessary change. This work requires independence because the status quo i e. Corporate blackface doesn't change when power, privilege and money can be leveraged against the truth. Which means that your financial support via becoming a hashtag are testing. Sponsor is acquired. Please visit hashtag Augustine dot com and become a monthly sponsor of the community.
\n Thank you and have a wonderful day fixture culture. Stop playing. The person was coming in that way often do. Little Blake is their fault. Undated Video No, let's question why several women. It's like relationships when you meet the same female, a male over and over again. And you having the same experience. That something that I do something not understanding the importance of put a resource of what your mouth is. I'm gonna talk about this. And I'm so sick.
\n Yeah. Comes from here. Where is the money? Where's the money? Oh, for that. Then you tell me what you're communicating is that is not valuable to you. So you can talk all you want about how important inclusion and diversity is to you. But if you're not putting resources into it, you are lying. You are not your values because way about things you pay money for, just like coming of us. Raise your hand. You work on your PC. Yeah, way value.
\n Is it easy for me? Everyone work on a TCP and ICMP seem to me that's like travel in the and I'm a part of the difficult. I didn't understand it and I'm OK with that. We have to understand that we have to put how much to pay for. I don't get a $200 PC. My my man can shut up because it's seven years old and I need to get a new. But I hold on to that. Met to the five, not getting freaking PC.
\n Well, not and so we need to understand that because I have to be that I paid 3700. It has gotten me through. Let's be honest, cause a lot of a lot of people recycle a whole bunch of PC's in the time that I have. So we put money that things that we value nothing to overcome the inherent this truck, you know, we're in the South. Black people treated pretty pissed poor down here. So you come up with ways, got this thing on the back and hear what they really want. Let's read between what they what they want.
\n For this saying it's not personal. You is just the history and to be faced that, you know, this is what I'm gonna say, cause I'm not very little. But what I am going to say is, I'm happy that we have this election because it woke up a lot of life forms you can never saying hand There's no racism in the United States. Good God, I got sick of hearing that because it wasn't racism against you. You didn't experience it every day. You didn't realize Bob since the Thanksgiving table once wrote that you saw him in March. Oh, I'll see any. This will people up. But then what? What we're doing now is very active. What full after things can we do? And this is the perspective I come from because everything right now we're doing in in an inclusion and diversity is very reactive the last way sinking desire to seek simple answers to complex problems When did not give your overnight We're not gonna get out of this overnight.
\n It is a systemic issue. By changing one teen in organization does not make you an inclusive and diverse organization. You need to realize that this is hard work. And at this point, I'm going to speak specifically. No, this is where I get to it.
\n Someone speak specifically rattle. Just it doesn't matter. A major barriers to community engineer, and specifically I'm gonna talk about inclusion and diversity, lack of expertise. You cannot give volunteers to do my job, You could try. They're gonna screw it up, and it's not gonna be their fault. I have a unique set of steals and I'm gonna want about two. I have an undergraduate in interior design, so that means I see abstract.
\n See symmetry, symmetry, asymmetry. See, I think in engineering, I, like apply science. That's one of the doctors. Business Administration was a deviate, as opposed to pH because ph. D. In management spirit, they're writing theories. A g p a. Is someone takes the theories and apply it to be real business problems. I wouldn't saw business just thinking so I have undergraduate interior design a masters in trying to development, which means I'm gonna write curriculums workshops. I am US expert on adult learning. I understand. Don't learning theory. So then I went into working in school programs.
\n So I'm expert in development philosophy, which is seeing young people as a positive resident negative no matter where they come from. But I was working in bringing Cabrini Green housing project. It is a challenge to see with someone who's out there that doesn't job on my street right now. Who he spends more time in jail But as soon as he comes back from jail, knocks on my door and says, Hey, this great number Haley week. So we're gonna do better and I know that is not what I'm encouraging. I sit there talkto him because my new development training I see him where he wants to be, a hole where it is. So then I said, Well, Chicago and there is no structure after school setting.
\n So I got an education that everyone gets a good guy in that system. But because I'm happy I got to see what the problems were. And let me tell you, I don't like your kids like you for having these seeds because what you've done is tell these kids that they could do absolutely nothing. No, absolutely nothing still reward for. We know that go on in the world. That is not what we're not prepared for. The rule. They don't know. Coping skills, that's why they're first in space when they get depressed when they get down is to think about suicide. They know continue because they never experienced stress. They've never experienced failure.
\n Every time something happens, some parent comes in and cleans it up I have students will be nothing for four years of high school. Two weeks left of school, about to graduate. They know not about spreads. You get Paris calm, Superintendent. And now we have to jump through hoops to get extra credit. When any new regular credit to get into graduate because their numbers you have to meet. What is that to somebody? What does that season, the blackmail, who has done nothing for four years you wanted because you want to wonder why he has No, probably. Yeah. You have that. I want that. I'm gonna take that. So that's not putting this on innocent.
\n This is all wrong problems. We all sweat. That's an intentional. So I went there and then I've been an improv classes. I mean, acting classes I've been singing. And now I'm getting Deviate is always wondered about business, but with the Internet, I couldn't find a structure system to learn about business. So I decided to go into business. I was doing it, you know, I just got interesting to take after that, and it just went that way. I'm just a natural. So the people you are bringing to do my job to help with your, including university.
\n I have my steals. They did not understand how to now get relationships the way I do. They did not understand how have complicated conversations with people and still that walk away with dignity. They didn't know what they have processes in place to build a business so that every customer experience is the same. So that's a problem. And then you have my support. Everybody was doing this all or low If their organization leaders are not supported them wasting your time. Stop lying to yourself. I would rather you just said You know what? We just don't use you about this. Just be honest, because what you're doing is burning out people working hard, and then you ever gonna get anywhere. You're never gonna implement anything that they're telling you to do.
\n In the lack of authority to have this job, you need to be able to have the authority to make change. So we see all these Fortune 500 companies bring in these very bright, smart Black people to be the sea level inclusion and diversity individuals. What do they have the authority to make? A season don't have to go back to the CEO Border directors before they make a decision, if I have to. And again I talked about the resource is this takes time. Resource takes money. Resource. It takes energy resource. It takes a lot to do just to be on this stage right now. Speaking on his energy, people think I don't believe me when I say I'm an introvert.
\n If you can't be right outside and it is for the whole track, you won't see me because I want to go decompress. And I'm looking for the first right back tomorrow to because this is hard for me. But I know it needs to be done. So this is what I do. OK, So piecing is theory that my research is based on is learning organizations. So again, is the systemic idea off thinking about changing the system is still thinking silence. So we always assume cause Allen anything. So if I trip you everybody looks to see all this is over, right? So then you bring in the people say, Is there something on stage? It could be on clumsy.
\n It could be It could be a whole lot of reasons, but we are so cause out based on something that happened before. So I'm gonna read this human on any specifics about the research convinced causes no conference. So specifics about the research, that ideas to prepare for the no active. He knows that if you really want more detail about this, you need to go watch so more Riley. Current reality itself is for many of us beginning we don't want to face with the realities we fight against what is We're not so much drawn to what we want to create that as we are repeal what we have.
\n So here what? I'm seeing ISS. You don't like the culture, but you really are drawn to creating something new. So you just don't like this. But the effort is gonna take into something that is not really what You just want this to stop by this logic, deeper fear the more you're really four, what is the more motivated we are to change things must be bad enough. Our people will not changed in fundamental ways. This is the truth.
\n Think about it in your life. In the last year, with all this full Teoh living day, too much weight for me, but it's easier to eat the food that that's provided for me for us follows fruit. What's that did not work for? This is my job. And so in Texas, in a pool, great work out. That's just, you know, it's like it really has to get bad. And I tell myself, I want to get so bad that I can't physically do what I need to do. Amazing experiences traveling the world.
\n Do I not want to be able to experience those things because my body is just not able to do that, So I don't They continue to have a conversation with myself. So again, I I want to be in alignment. So for me, it's about me being honest with myself, and you need to be honest with yourself as well. So let me tell you the some of the things that I experienced and then I'm gonna open up. I'm gonna answer some questions that I always get. So everybody here understands, remembers the whole no Twitter, you know, Twitter me A for like, two weeks there was handled Well, what's where? I just got accepted to speaking.
\n No. Interactive. OK. You know, what I myself. So because some of those comments and they were rough, they were off. They displayed the worst in human beings. And so I was concerned, particularly for my physical safety, because again, being a Black female, I do not want to walk into a room off every white man because I don't say what I gotta say. I just need to make sure security right there. I try to be a water for this or anybody else.
\n And also remember, I get to get paid, so I'm not taking a bullet for you at all. So I do my research because again, it's the system that was like there's make sure I get this, get the whole picture. I don't go by what I see Twitter, which also goes day. And let's be honest, we see something on Twitter. We read sweet things without checking facts. We do a whole bunch of things. So I started interviewing and what I found. The people who are making the most distant, disgusting comments weren't even in the community. That stuff just came up in an to intervene in ages, found some way they start their bow spew all but because you didn't know that. You'll start responding.
\n We started feeding controls and it just kept going and going and going and going. Also, what I found is the action that was taking that everybody was pissed off about Hey, anything? Cause Alley, Do you think that was what we'll know it because of stuff that no jail groups did not take care of two years ago and that blue because they didn't hear some stuff that happened before. And this is from people I've talked to have talked to people living in TV. They admit they did not want to address these things. They did not know how to address these things. So it's like sweeping stuff under the rug in gold, like it just gets bigger and itself. What, you're gonna trip over.
\n It's all of the courses like it now is. So what's now for? No, what's now for you? I'll be honest. It's also gonna be honest. This is my most honest conversation after my known experience, after speaking to members of leadership on the No team, they're great individuals. I personally don't see enough momento moving forward to say that this community is going to change anytime soon. There were several conversations I had when I was there, where I had to tell people I can't ask that question because that's something I had paid for Consulting is people want to always stop me in the hall again. This simple answers to complex issue and say all having this issue of my organization Can you get if anybody gave you an answer without any kind of resurgence in your organization, you're wasting your one that is not.
\n That's not how this stuff changes. These are systemic problems. Also, there's a challenge of the open source community how you fund certain things. And still there's a funding structure that pays for the things that you say you value. Did you know about everything that I see? I said everything that moved many other things and I see all lie, and this is not just know Jack's.
\n This is many other online communities that I see that I've just been researching many of or organization. Look at uber. I don't know what everybody thought when they brought in a new CEO. Things change that is the culture of the organization. So everybody supplies with something new. House they're gonna keep happening because competitors coming. Just a reminder of why we're here and why we do. We do in the Hachette causes in community. We followed the Hashtag Coliseum guiding principles. One tick is not neutral to intention without strategies, Chaos three.
\n Lack of inclusion is a risk management issue, and four on the most important. We must prioritise the most vulnerable a lot of business because competitors is coming in and taking on the markets here. And this is the thing. I'm gonna walk you through a scenario for no Js to me. So the question I asked was, Is there a direct competitors know Jesus? And my answer was no. A lot of people were going to another, got the name of the group, but it wasn't even with The fork is not a competitive er. People see that that's gonna be merged back, so there's no competitors to me from a business person.
\n There's really no incentive to change. There's this. I don't like what we are, but there's no incentive to do the work that needs to happen to change it. So what happens is you continue to ask people newbies. People are underrepresented marginalized communities to come into this cold base. They have awful experiences and they leave, which means you're not getting fresh eyes. Perspectives were not you. Maybe that stuff. So the cold base becomes stale because now only have the same work. Kobe's when they're saying for co base hero multiple doing about companies using LGS.
\n So this is where to meet the Army for they need to be paying for. This comes in because way are effectively able to update the cold. Makes make sure it's secure because we don't have the manpower of perspective to see that, because if you're working on coal based all today, you dont see you don't have a respectable the person who's been working in machine learning. Ai comes in and want to put their piece in there. What a person does this, that they're not gonna back up a little bit because we need to be concerned about embassy learning and bias and presidents and racism, because at some point, why, guys, you're gonna be because thes job with these computers can do your job.
\n If you have not figured out a way to differentiate yourself to be a problem solver, your mother is well, your job is going to the next the next AI machine learning program. And so as I'm speaking to you now, some of you may be going on. Death is so you may be like I wish you could get off the stage. I see some people nodding, and this means something to them, giving them some perspective they never had. I can't do that with a computer can do that with program. So if I have somebody who's working on machine learning AI program, who doesn't have this perspective, what's that called it into the system? How do you get that? These are the things we need to be thinking about, not just for ourselves, but we have a global concerns.
\n Are customers of global we don't not want to co something into programs that and hit people from energy Columbia using our software people from Taiwan using these are things we need to be very specific and clear about what you can't with only one respect. So I'm gonna go back to my story. So you have a whole people coke, obviously using They don't understand.
\n They have developers, but they're not working, you know, they like somebody part of the job, but that's not the entirety of the co base. Once that cold base is secure, that goes directly into their code plays. And now what they need to be concerned about is the security of their their customer experiences. So we need to stop thinking about things just right here. I started looking at the long term, effective things. If I do something like a lot of life, it if I let my Is it gonna call the tsunami late? This is the quest. These are the questions people are asking themselves, because again, we want these quick fixes.
\n So when I stopped in the Hollywood, somebody wants to say, Well, can you answer this question or I had a conversation yesterday. The Senate comes this to. Somebody asked me What? What about the interview process? We cant hit women. People of color passed the interview process because the interview process in tech is not set up for how women people of color process, that's it set up for how me and compete. That's how to set up. And then we think about if you look at Google and Microsoft and they would want these. They do these heart test majority of these people, these young men straight out of college in college. So they have time months to study for this test.
\n If you are a wife, a mother. Ah, father, you're trying to bring you. Have you already full time. You don't have the hours it takes to study one of those tests. That's and that's that you have included in that you give it to you, but you won't be successful. That's just like me taking one of my modeling intellectual disabled students and tell him and take the S a T inspecting. There's nothing wrong with my student. This is just intensive. They cannot. Now I have ones high functioning and I have a verbal verbal tests. That's what differentiation is all about. So I was required to give people tested different ways.
\n So I had to watch the computer and have it read to them some I had to read to them, but then that based on what they were, you can not. We can no longer have a blanket interview system. This is an inflammation of. This is no more industrial economy where you give a person a manual and learn their jobs. This information economy information is nothing until it's internalized and because knowledge that does not happen in the current in the process. White morning doesn't because if you, if you go is test fully, you may know all every library, every function, everything and you may be writing stuff at home.
\n But the fact that you can't take pestis test does not mean you don't know what you can learn. We need to stop our test, how introduced people. It is antiquated. We are information economy. We're not an industrial is explicit. Knowledge means very little to us now is tacit knowledge. It's blizzard now let's let me define. Is that information that can be putting the manual that you you know, your HR, The thing inside awful tacit knowledge is that knowledge comes with Lord experiences.
\n That's hard to capture. What is the most valuable fan you need for competitive event? That's what organizations are competing on now that tacit knowledge that they can use for differentiation and innovation because that's what helps them differentiate themselves, become competitive in a little not the man, because everybody has so give you example. Everybody, there's this four gets cold condoms according kind of back south is worthless. And I know hurts people's feelings little.
\n Well, that's what I'm here for. The code of conduct is a list of things that we will not be. We do not accept. That's reaction. Nice. Be nice. Is not because it is not Be respectful is not. So what? I'm gonna do this to you again. Let Marines and Golden. And so you have to make effective cold conduct is the one thing I would do you for free. So you have a list of what we don't want. And I'm gonna talk about sexual harassment because there should think that they're my something about everybody was so actually arrested. But so let's talk about that.
\n So you have way have a no sexual harassment policy? The hell's that, that's not measurable. So now what we need to do is defined terms. So I'm gonna It was done, lady. Hey, in this organization, this is how we defined sexual rest. Do you agree with this term? Yes or no? All right. So once this person we've talked about it, I want make sure you understand it. This is so you know that in a video this as our organization, this is how we define such arrest. You don't have that like it. But this is how we define All right, But that's not enough. Now I have to say, this is how we find defined sexual rights for people that power because it's a whole another level of sexual harassment.
\n So this is as an organization, if your power, this is what sexual harassment looks like. And these are the outcomes of you Agree Now it's only at this point came when someone says you sexual arrest me or I want to complain about sexual resident. That I now come to the persons is OK. This is what we defined as sex or arrested, right? Right. Your behaviour. Brooke. This this and this. You don't have agreement, but this is what you agreed to. And there's consequences today. If you don't do that, anybody to say no, this is how you find it.
\n You can't hold him, account current cold. Come on us. And they are cannot hold anybody accountable. That's what I have so much backlash because there no teeth. Did you just say that's being reactive? That's the proactive thing. Let's educate people because now creepy is, well, all the people previous. So if it means making the saying OK, this is what group he is. And he is not you with that only cause because we have inclusion and diversity.
\n That only comes if you have people at the table who are different perspectives. Sitting at the table creating is called. This might be a question here that this might be something we probably let's define this another course that I often is. Why they saw me. They don't listen to me. They mansplaining are you? Well, I say this I have a motto in my life I don't wanna be right about when you have.
\n So the reason I'm making a pivot is because currently working inclusion universities may not making me write or happy. So it's just not happy. So that's why I want to focus on business. And I'll talk about that in just a second. So I want to be happy. I have to assume that every man is being asshole. Just just talk to each other. So a man who tries to may explain me Oh, to educate them for the wider female audience so they don't get paid to listen for him to be open because I'm going to say, because I have done a lot of my old spiritual work like one of my favorite books is before agreements.
\n And what ISS intentional with your words don't take anything personal bills into. So I've worked on this and that's all reason. Religion this work. And so I don't explain him. Excuse me. I'm very intentional about what I said. There's nothing you need to read into what I said or take out exactly, except exactly what I see. Have you won't clarification on that? That's a conversation we could have. But what I said is what I mean. It's And unless there is further complicates conversation, we need to move on.
\n And most me, just like, How do you think of it? I've been called aggressive so many freakin times. It's just when I say notice what I mean. That's an issue that women had. We said no, it's all because we're not. Periods were just PM missing were cranky or she's just not great with people know Dammit, I know I'm not doing I'm not doing, I do next at school all the time. My manager principle, they knew me. They asked me to do something. I said no, Don't ask me because what I waas doing was waiting. When I need to do so, I'm not gonna do that.
\n And that's how some of the sexual harassment stuff people, people don't understand those Valery's I live in it. No everyone. So I'm not aggressive. I'm asserted certain, and I had to be certain I was only Blackerby itself the only all the time. If I allow the environment around me, I would have been turned inside out. I remember at some point saying me and looks yellow white.
\n I didn't understand what that meant because I was a child, but I just knew even at that that there was a different game being played. And so I've developed the person that I am very intentional, and that is how women and people of color are gonna succeed in this. You come with a unique perspective that needs to be respected. You don't need to apologize. You are. You don't need apologize that your experience but your experience needs to be told so that other people can understand different perspectives. That's why I encourage people off underrepresented and marginalized communities. This is the best place to be on this stage.
\n You guys are looking at me as an introvert. I don't even have to do that. I hate small talk. Hate first things. So I have to do that. You guys know you come up to me and start a conversation right now. I love it, but we need to get more people for different perspectives on the stage telling their stories so that people understand what is out there, what their customers look like, what the communities look like. And that again, like me. You're not only experts in the room for what? You never have been the only experts, and we just didn't say we just not sitting out what is good because it makes you better people.
\n It makes your experience is better. It makes all of our experiences better. And we need to stop thinking about the short term. It did not take us overnight to get where we are. It was decisions that will consciously or unconsciously made there. Is this the physics? The something, of course, A vacuum. What is the first word. The nature nature abhors a vacuum. That's a lot of physics. If you're not intentional about your community and your values at the beginning, something that you don't want is going to take his place. So while you're generating your product to services tents in Regent's organizational culture, if you know in two weeks sprints every two weeks, you need to be going to have customers going to your internal external stakeholders and asking them how we know what does this look like? We say the value customer experience OK, lets that's not measurable.
\n What do you mean by customer experience? We want to make sure that there we lower our terrorists. So in that to express your region out customers and asking them, How can we look how we make us a better experience for you? That you don't return on products services and you love from that? Because they take that information, you internalize it and it becomes knowledge. It's worthless if it's just information that's over. Inundated with data data means nothing to somebody, interprets it and disseminates it.
